Below, I summarize all the important updates that came in Apple’s WWDC (Worldwide Developer’s Conference) 2020.
IOS 14, as expected, brings tons of additional features with this year’s release. Now you can view your apps in-app library instead of the grid that we all are used to. Widgets are now meaningful and look more beautiful, Apple has added android like functionality that allows you to put widgets on your home screen. With picture in picture, now you can watch videos over other apps. In messages app now you have replies feature to help you keep track of group conversations. A new translation app allows you to translate in real-time, so you can have a conversation with anyone. You don’t need car keys anymore, with IOS 14 and 13 you can use car keys feature that unlocks your car with your iPhone. There are other tons of UI changes that make your UI more beautiful and easy to use.
IPad OS 14
iPad has already replaced our laptops to some extent, but with iPad OS 14, Apple has taken it to another level. Not actually. There is not much new here, now they have included spotlight search like functionality called search, it looks exactly like spotlight search on Mac. All the other features of IOS 14 is now available on IPad OS 14. One new thing that came is with apple pencil, now you can scribble to type text and select handwritten text easily.
Airpods pro brings spatial audio with the new update, this allows you to have a more immersive audio experience that seems more realistic. Airpods can now even switch between devices, so let’s say you were in a call with John, now you switch over to your mac to watch a movie, your AirPods will automatically switch, saving you from all the hassle to reconnect.
Mac OS 11 (Big Sur)
Yes, we have finally moved from fifteen Mac OS X versions to Mac OS 11.
New mac design now looks similar to iPad OS, icons have now changed. The menu bar has a translucent color, which makes UI more beautiful. Mac now has widgets and control center similar to iPad, even the notification center is like iPad OS. Safari has now more privacy features that let you see all the data and permissions asked by your extensions.
TV OS 14
Picture in Picture in the new TV OS 14, will allow you to do your home workout while watching your favorite shows. With the new update, you can now watch who is at your doorstep with the integration of the Home app with your Apple TV and face recognition.
Watch OS 7
Now you can share your watch faces across social media, or to your contact individually. Dance is now included in the workout app to accurately calculate your calories while dancing. Fully fetched sleep tracking is finally available on your apple watch, wind down allows you to turn off any distractions you can have due to your iPhone or the watch. Hand-washing! yes, now apple watch can track if you have washed your hands properly or not with a timer and sensing the running water.
The biggest announcement in the event was the launch of Apple Silicon, Apple’s own processor. As we all know that iPhones and iPad work on Apple’s own processors, this allows them to be faster and work more efficiently. Similarly, Apple’s own processor would allow Mac to run faster and more efficiently. This would allow Mac to be a more significant part of the ecosystem.
This conference was a fresh beginning for MacBooks, with new Apple Silicon and Mac OS Big Sur, Macs will be much faster, smoother, and powerful than ever before. This would make the Apple ecosystem much stronger and very harsh for the competition.
If I missed out on something, let me know in the comments.
